General David Petraeus has had some good news this week as it is now being reported that elite lawyer Robert Barnett will be representing him as he makes his way through his career ending legal process related to his affair.

Robert Barnett has a reputation for overseeing things like book deals for high end, elite figureheads such as President Obama himself, as well as Sarah Palin. While there is currently no book planned for General Petraeus, Robert Barnett will apparently be helping him in his transition out of government. Petraeus is currently being investigated for his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell.

The general has said his resignation is solely because of his affair with Broadwell, and that he never divulged classified information to the writer.

Robert Barnett has a long resume of representing authors and politicians as they prepare book deals, and so for some it is kind of interesting that he is assisting in the transition out of government for Petraeus. But this is not all that unusual for Barnett, as he has helped several public figures transition back to the private sector.

Petraeus will need all the help he can get, especially given the fact that this affair has received so much press. Since the general was so involved in foreign affairs, the president is going to have a lot of work on his hands replacing him and getting that person briefed on as much as possible. Some critics have voiced concern over the fact that this affair is getting so much attention, and none of the general’s military decisions have ever received as much.

While the general’s affair has overshadowed his career, the notion that he may have divulged classified information to Broadwell is cause for concern, which again is likely why the CIA is conducting an investigation into the full nature of the relationship between the two people.
