Mexican-American singer, Jenny Dolores Rivera Saavedra, better known as Jenni Rivera is pronounced dead, following a plane crash at 3:25AM Sunday, December 9th, 2012. Her death is confirmed by her father, Pedro Rivera in a Telemundo interview later on the same day.
“We thought it was a press speculation, we wanted to believe that. But it’s true, my daughter is dead,” the singer’s father said, according to earlier reports.
Before her untimely demise was announced, the 43-year old singer was reported missing after her plane has lost contact with air traffic control in Mexico, a few minutes after taking off in Monterrey. Later on, Mexican authorities confirmed that wreckage of the private Learjet 25, carrying two pilots and five passengers, including Jenni Rivera was found in Nuevo Leon state with no survivors.
The plane was heading for Toluca, where the late singer was supposed to appear on La Voz… México. The exact cause of the plane crash was yet to be known but based on the data from the US Federal Aviation Administration which revealed the plane was built in 1969, many thought that the plane was likely experiencing some system failure or malfunction due to its age and previous accident record.
In 2005, Notimex reported that the private Learjet 25 that recently crashed had experienced a fuel system malfunction while trying to take off on an Amarillo airstrip. The reported system malfunction had caused the plane’s one wing to weigh more than the other. Luckily, no one was hurt in that accident.
Jenni Rivera’s driver’s license as well as an identification belonging to the plane pilot, Miguel Perez were recovered by the police and forensic experts at the scene of the plane crash.
People on board that plane include the pilots, Miguel Perez and Alejandro Torres, Jenni Rivera’s publicist and makeup artist, whose identities are yet to be determined.
On Tuesday, the singer’s brothers Pedro, Gustavo and Juan will head for Mexico to identify the remains of their late sister. Jenni’s body will then be taken back to Los Angeles, where her family plans to lay her to rest.
Before this tragedy, Jenni was having a concert Saturday night in Monterrey, where she held a press conference after the event. Talking to the press, the singer spoke about her recent issue with her ex-husband Esteban Loaiza. She had told the media, the reason why she decided to divorce the former Major League Baseball pitcher.
Jenni Rivera was recognized for her work in the banda and norteña music genres. She started her recording career in 1992, focusing more on social issues, relationships and infidelity. She was scheduled to star in the latest family comedy on ABC, entitled “Jenni.” Her latest on-screen appearance this year was in Chiquis ‘n Control.
